Camp At Foxfield

Foxfield’s Resident Summer Camp has been welcoming students from all over the world for more than 30 years. Campers have attended from such diverse locations as Switzerland, Japan, Micronesia, France, Hong Kong, Canada, Mexico, and England, as well as from the local area.

There are four two-week sessions between beginning-June and early August, all of which give horse-loving girls the opportunity to spend plenty of time with these wonderful animals. Thirty girls between the ages of 9 and 16 attend each of the sessions, which include a series of lessons that run the gamut from teaching first-timers the basics to honing the skills of more advanced riders. Campers are divided up into groups based on their riding ability, to provide riders with activities appropriate to their skill levels.

During the second week of camp, all students ride in a regular camp show that is held on the last Friday of the session. Parents are encouraged to attend this event, which is followed by an awards ceremony and dinner for campers and parents.

A lot of riding takes place other than in formal lessons. Each camper is assigned 3-4 horses during her stay (in addition to her own, if she brought one). Campers focus on equitation and jumping, but also have opportunities to try out vaulting, dressage, roads and tracks, stadium jumping, and cross country jumping. In addition, campers take part in daily grooming, tack, and horse care, and participate in lectures and other activities that promote good horsemanship.

Children who have their own horses are welcome to bring them, though only a few stalls are available each session. Children who don’t own a horse need not worry; Foxfield has one of the finest collections of school horses anywhere. Many are the same horses who win championships on the show circuit or perform with Foxfield’s famous Drill Team.

Though the camp focuses on riding, it offers a wide variety of traditional camp activities as well. Campers swim daily in Foxfield’s pool. They have treasure hunts and enjoy skits and sing-alongs at night. They make excursions to a nearby park and the beach. They compete in People Jumping Competitions along with the kids (and some adults) who are regulars at Foxfield. These are always spirited and fun events.

Foxfield can accommodate only 24 students per session and has been wildly popular for more than fifty years. Enrollment is extremely limited, but you can find out how to go about it on our enrollment page.
