At Foxfield, students learn horsemanship, sportsmanship, camaraderie and fun through a combination of group riding lessons, private riding lessons, and special programs like Foxfield's Little Sisters Program.
Group Lessons
Most riders--even Foxfield's most advanced--take group lessons most of the time. Group lessons are offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. A special group lesson for absolute beginners is also offered on Friday afternoons.
Foxfield's students include everyone from small children who are having their first experiences on horseback to national jumper and medal champions, so the barn's group lessons are divided into roughly four groups: Beginners, Advanced-Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. All group lessons last one hour and cost $40.00. Admittance to all advanced group lessons is by invitation only.
Private Lessons
Foxfield offers private and semi-private lessons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays. Most private and semi-private lessons last one hour, though they can be customized to suit the ability and requirements of the rider. Private lessons are offered by arrangement with any of Foxfield's instructors, and cost:
$75.00—One hour private lesson
$60.00—One hour semi-private lesson
Signing Up
Riders can sometimes sign up for a lesson within an hour of the time the lesson begins, but advanced reservations are highly recommended. Cancellations, on the other hand, must be made at least 24 hours ahead of time.
To reserve a spot in a lesson and/or request a school horse, riders should call (805) 495-5515 Monday - Saturday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
New Riders
New riders will have to fill out release forms before they can begin lessons at Foxfield, and a parent or guardian will have to sign them if the rider is under eighteen. You can obtain the forms at the schooling barn, or you can click on the links below to view and fill them out right here online.
Necessary Forms:
Foxfield needs to keep a couple of forms on file for its students. They include:
Student Release Form for adults and juniors
Medical Release Form for juniors
For even more information, new riders can check out our beginners' FAQ and Foxfield Big Sister Lexi Shaw's "how-to" on Choosing and Using Riding Helmets.
To view these forms, you will need to have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.
