You do not need to register with any association to ride in Foxfield fun shows (Spring Fun, SumFun, POTS, Holiday). But, if you plan to show at all, Nancy and JoAnn recommend that you join PCHA, LAHSA and SFVHSA at a minimum. If you plan to show at the Paddock, Gold Coast, Pebble Beach, Santa Barbara, etc., plan on joining USEF also.
There are basically three reasons for joining a horse show association:
- The show you are competing in charges a fee if you are not a member (e.g., Gold Coast shows charge $20 for each junior rider who is not a member of USEF, $20 for each USHJA non-member and $10 for each PCHA non-member, so joining those associations is a good idea if you plan to ride in several Gold Coast shows).
- You plan to ride in any medal classes, in which case you must join the appropriate associations as listed below:

- You plan to keep track of your horse's points throughout the year, in which case you must make him a member also (points are kept on various levels of hunters and jumpers).
All association membership forms are available on the associations' web sites or in the Foxfield office.
* When you join USEF, be sure to also join USHJA on the same membership application. You can save $5 by joining online.
** Horse registrations are extra. Register your horse only if you want to keep track of hunter or jumper points in any particular association. We recommend you do not register your horse for points with USEF. It is expensive and extremely competitive. (However, he will still need a USEF recording number if he does not already have one). Note: Equitation points go to the rider, not the horse. Also, some classes are not pointed (see horse show premiums for details).
